02.24.09 Behind the new Veterans release there is a long battle that we had to fight against Apple's unclear rules. >>
HolyWars is getting serious! How to make sure Apple likes the way you deal with Adults like an adult December 16, 2008 - VITO Technology releases HolyWars for iPhone – a Social Networking tool for creating polls and sharing opinions. 2 months have gone and what is HolyWars now? 25.000 users, 32.500 questions, 3.000.000 answers and a new version just launched for the Veterans...but it hasn't been as easy as it sounds. Behind the new Veterans release there is a long battle that we had to fight against Apple's unclear rules.
HolyWars story and success starts with a simple idea – to find out what people have in mind about today’s world. The application is simple: let people insert questions about anything they want to know about or confront themselves with. Let other answer any question they find interesting and see how their answers stand across the globe.
After the creation of polls, the next step is the one of creating quizzes. People test their knowledge on different topics and play against other users and check how good they are on a global scale. Simple, right? Human curiosity is infinite and Holywars’ popularity grows exponentially gaining users who avidly keep inserting new questions and create quizzes about everything…but…of course there is a but…soon people started asking for an adult category and the 1.1 version included it because of the huge amount of requests. As soon as it appeared the 'war' began!
So here it is a little bit of history about the "adult" category that created a series of problems around this HolyWars app. Firstly, when the version 1.0 was approved by Apple there was no adult category at all and very modest moderation. Afterwards the app became quite popular (the highest position in Appstore was 21st place among top free apps in Social Networking). Lots of questions with inappropriate and sexual content appeared in all categories. We tried to put some moderations but didn't help as much as we thought it would and we decided to add the "adult" category to make sure that all questions with sexual content were kept there and only those people interested would go there without disturbing the other users.
Apple, as predictable, intervened, we can't really blame Apple for it, and asked HolyWars to remove the category. Acting according Apple’s request HolyWars deleted everything related to adult content from the application and sent an informative note to all users to communicate openly that the ‘adult’ category was banned and therefore had been taken off and furthermore that no ‘adult’ content would be further allowed on HolyWars application. A simple note to make sure that users would not repeat the same mistakes and that HolyWars was dead serious about it.
The note wanted to be an admission of our initial fault and a clarification of the standards that HolyWars had chosen to follow in order to remain in the game amending the application as told by Apple.
Apparently this was not good enough for Apple that started accusing us of putting the note for marketing purposes imposed on HolyWars users to push sales and intervenes again this time suspending the appearance of HolyWars in their store and holds back all planned improvements for the new version of which they were already aware.
So HolyWars new version remained on hold because sinned of honesty (I don’t see any other way to explain the will behind the note sent) and it is still waiting for a reasonable explanation from Apple about what was wrong with that piece of information sent to its users. Now the explanation hasn't arrived yet but there is a good ending because Apple at last approved the ‘cleaned’ and upgraded Veterans version, it probably couldn't find anything else wrong about it.
It seems to me this can easily be put among those other cases where Apple covers itself under an unclear policy and agreement with the developers, trying to find anything not dictated by it unacceptable.
What needs to be done apart from following Apple’s rules if, once applied them correctly, more critics and impediments are given?
